Looking Forward – What’s on the Technology Horizon?

An article entitled “Looking Forward – What’s on the Technology Horizon?” has been published in Information World Europe. This article introduces a talk that Brian Kelly will give at the Internet Library International (ILI) conference to be held in London on 27-28 October 2011.

Brian Kelly’s talk is based on a JISC Observatory’s Technology Output Report commissioned by UKOLN and CETIS, the JISC Innovation Support Centres.  That report provides a summary of innovations that an international panel of experts feel will have significant impact in the next year or sooner, in 2-3 years, and in 4-5 years. Brian Kelly’s talk will explore the implications on these innovations for those working in libraries and related organisations.

IWMW 2011: Systems Approach

Paul Walk, Deputy Director, UKOLN, and Thom Bunting, Web Manager (eFramework and JISC IE Technical Foundations), UKOLN, will both be contributing to sessions on 27 July 2011 at the Institutional Web Management Workshop 2011 (IWMW 2011). Thom in a computer-lab-based session entitled Doing Drupal: quick start deployments via distributions will focus on a distribution providing automated content and data aggregation, tagging, mapping, and trend visualisation. Paul,  conscious of the the lack of career options for successful Web developers in many HE institutions will explore the possible development of a new role in the sector – The Strategic Developer – a developer who has both technical and domain experience, and who can contribute to strategic planning and decision making.

The Challenges for Libraries and HEIs at SCURL AGM and AwayDay

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN, delivered a presentation at the recent Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries AGM and AwayDay held at the University of Glasgow. Her talk described the research data landscape and the associated challenges for libraries and Higher Education institutions. This event was followed by a Digital Curation Centre (DCC) Roadshow at the same location. Liz’s slides are now available.

LOCAH and LOD-LAM: Linked Open Data Summit

The International Linked Open Data in Libraries, Archives, and Museums Summit (“LOD-LAM”) will take place over 2-3 June  2011 in San Francisco, USA. It will ‘convene leaders in their respective areas of expertise from the humanities and sciences to catalyze practical, actionable approaches to publishing Linked Open Data.’

Adrian Stevenson of UKOLN is an invited expert and member of the organising committee for the Summit. He will also be presenting on the JISC-funded LOCAH (Linked Open Copac and Archives Hub) Project at the Summit.

Understanding Use of the Social Web

Brian Kelly has been invited to give a presentation entitled Metrics for Understanding Personal and Institutional Use of the Social Web by the workshop on Digital Impacts: How to Measure and Understand the Usage and Impact of Digital Content. The workshop, organised by the Oxford Internet Institute, will take place on 20 May 2011 at Jesus College, Oxford.  Further information on Brian’s talk is available from his recent blog post.

SageCite at Data Citation Principles Workshop

Monica Duke will be giving a short presentation entitled SageCite: Citation principles in practice when modelling disease networks at the Data Citation Principles Workshop taking place at IQSS, Harvard University, 16-17 May, 2011.  The talk will review some of the lessons that SageCite has learnt about the domain of disease modelling and will explore some challenges in applying the principles of data citation.
