Data Publishing: Challenges for HEIs and Libraries

Slides are now available from the presentation given by Liz Lyon entitled Data Publishing: Challenges for HEIs and Libraries at the Symposium “The Now and Future of Data Publishing” held at St. Anne’s College, Oxford on 22 May 2013.  Liz’ presentation was a contribution under the panel “Citation, Impact, Metrics”. The Symposium was organised by the Jisc Managing Research Data Programme in conjunction with a range of partners including BioSharing, DataONE, Dryad, the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers, Wiley-Blackwell, and others.

Microsoft eScience Workshop 2012: What Is a Data Scientist?

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN and Kenji Takeda of Microsoft Research will give a presentation entitled What Is a Data Scientist? at the forthcoming Microsoft eScience Workshop 2012. The ninth annual Microsoft eScience Workshop will be held over 8 and 9 October at the Hyatt Regency Chicago in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on eScience 2012. Discussions and presentations will once again relate to the theme of eScience in Action. Each year, the workshop provides a forum for scientists and researchers to share their experiences and expertise with the academic and research communities.

Launch of JISC TechWatch Report: Preparing for Data-driven Infrastructure

The JISC Observatory has published a report on “Preparing for Data-driven Infrastructure” which offers institutions advice on approaches to managing the increasing demands on their business and other data.

The report describes ways in which institutions can respond to strategic drivers in order to adopt a more data-centric approach across a range of development activities. The report includes a description of data-centric architectures, an overview of tools and technologies including APIs, Linked Data and NoSQL, together with a review of architectural approaches which institutions will need to consider when responding to requirements for greater transparency in their business processes.

Data Management Initiatives at IFLA

Marieke Guy, Research Officer at the Digital Curation Centre, UKOLN will be co-presenting with Maggie Pickton of the University of Northampton and Sarah Jones, Digital Curation Centre at HATII, University of Glasgow, during Conference Session 116, “The role of libraries in data curation, access and preservation: an international perspective” at IFLA 2012 in Helsinki. Their presentation, to be given on the morning of 14 August 2012, is entitled Leading from the library: data management initiatives at the University of Northampton. Spaces Available at DCC Belfast and London Roadshows

The Digital Curation Centre is running a series of regional roadshows to support HEIs in their research data management. Registration is open for two more DCC data management roadshows.

The London roadshow is being organised in conjunction with the Library Services at Imperial College London and will take place on 21 – 22 May 2012 at 58 Prince’s Gate, Imperial College London.

The Northern Ireland roadshow is being organised in conjunction with Queen’s University Belfast and will take place on 6 – 7 June 2012 at the Auditorium, McClay Library, Queen’s University, Belfast.

Data Management Plans at the DCC East Midlands Roadshow

Monica Duke of UKOLN will give a presentation on Data Management Plans at the DCC East Midlands Roadshow  being held at the University of Loughborough.  She will consider research funder requirements and data management planning in terms of what funders expect, how to write a Data Management Plan, and what DMP Online can offer.

UKOLN Contributions to CERIF Tutorial

Catherine Pink and Rosemary Russell of UKOLN will be contributing to the CERIF Tutorial and UK Data Surgery on Thursday 9 February in Bath. Catherine will be giving a short introduction to the JISC-funded Research360 Project during the data surgery, demonstrating how the project aims to explore the use of CERIF in research data management.  Rosemary will contribute to the CERIF tutorial during the morning by providing a brief overview of the UK CERIF landscape.  She has also written a news feature on the importance of CERIF to UK Higher Education institutions which is available on the UKOLN Web site.
