Data Management Planning at ICED11

A paper written by the ERIM Project team has been accepted for presentation at the 18th International Conference on Engineering Design (ICED11), to be held over 15-18 August 2011 in Copenhagen. The paper, Data Management Planning in Engineering Design and Manufacturing Research by Mansur Darlington, Alex Ball, Tom Howard, Chris McMahon and Steve Culley, will explain how the project characterised the nature of engineering research data and developed a modelling technique for visualising its context.

The ERIM Project is a JISC-funded collaboration between the Innovative Design and Manufacturing Research Centre at the University of Bath, and UKOLN in its capacity as part of the UK Digital Curation Centre.

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN, will be speaking on the SageCite Project and the new Patients Participate! Project at the Sage Bionetworks Commons Congress in San Francisco on 15 – 16 April 2011.

The Sage Bionetworks Commons Congress brings together research and industry leaders, policy and IT experts, patient advocates, foundations and governments to work on programs and platforms that will create a disruptive transition in data sharing and public engagement.

SageCite Participates in JISC MRD International Workshop

The SageCite Project will be participating in the JISC Managing Research Data International Workshop on 28 and 29 March 2011. Sagecite is studying issues related to data citation around data, methods and publication in the domain of bio-informatics. As well as sharing progress with other projects, participants will also be invited to discuss requirements for managing research data, to identify gaps and priorities, and to contribute to shaping the strategic direction of the programme.

The Value of Local Developers

Based on their work on the DevCSI Project, Mahendra Mahey and Paul Walk will be running a session at the JISC Conference 2011 entitled The value of local developers: innovating in difficult financial times. This session will run for an hour from 12:30 on Tuesday 15 March 2011.

BS 8878 and the Holistic Approaches to Web Accessibility

Brian Kelly gave a talk entitled BS 8878 and the Holistic Approaches to Web Accessibility at a recent JISC CETIS Accessibility SIG meeting held at the BSI Headquarters in London. As described in an accompanying blog post, the recently published BS 8878 Code of Practice on Web Accessibility provides a level of redirect which enables organisations to address the limitation of the WCAG guidelines for Web accessibility.

How to Manage Research Data: Data Licensing

Alex Ball of UKOLN and the DCC will give a presentation on Data Licensing on Day 3 of the 2nd DCC Roadshow being held over 1 – 3 March 2011 in Sheffield. Alex’ session will feature an introduction to data licensing and will provide participants with an awareness of why licensing data is important, the impact licences have on future research, and the potential pitfalls to avoid. The theme of the final day of the Roadshow is Digital Curation 101 Lite: How to Manage Research Data.

Institutional Challenges in the Data Decade

Dr Liz Lyon, Associate Director, DCC and Director of UKOLN will speak on The Changing Data Landscape at the beginning of the first day of the 2nd DCC Roadshow to be held over 1 – 3 March 2011 at the Halifax Conference Centre, Sheffield. The theme of this second regional roadshow is Institutional Challenges in the Data Decade while Day One will consider The Research Data Landscape.
