Building Blocks of Metadata
Friday, October 15th, 2010Emma Tonkin and Andrew Hewson of UKOLN will give a paper entitled Building blocks of metadata in the session Principles and Innovations on 21 October 2010 at the International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications (DC-2010). This paper discusses a means of approaching the creation of new metadata schemas or application profiles – without making it seem too much like hard work. Further details are available.

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010Brian Kelly has been featured in an interview published in El Punt, an online journal published in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The interview took place when Brian gave a seminar on What Can We Learn From Amplified Events? at the University of Girona on 3 September 2010. For those who do not understand the Catalan language an English language version is available which is produced by the Google Translate service. Although the quality of the translation is less than ideal, it does help to convey the underlying message.

JISC/CNI Meeting 2010
Monday, June 14th, 2010The JISC/CNI Meeting 2010 planned by JISC and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) will take place over 1-2 July 2010 and will be held at the Barcelo Carlton Hotel, Edinburgh. The conference will be organised by UKOLN and will bring together experts from the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom. The conference theme this year is Managing Data in Difficult Times: policies, strategies, technologies and infrastructure to manage research and teaching data in a fast changing technological and economic environment. Topics for sessions include Cloud Computing, Innovation in Learning and Teaching, Open Data Policies, Shared Services, Repositories, Digital Content and Institutional Planning, Resource Discovery, Digital Preservation and e-Science. Citation of Network Models and Associated Data

The World of Data According to Dorothea Salo
Thursday, April 22nd, 2010UKOLN was delighted to be able to host a thought-provoking presentation by Dorothea Salo, Digital Repository Librarian for the University of Wisconsin, who has been visiting the UK in the past week or so. Featured by The Library Journal as one of its Movers & Shakers, Dorothea is noted for her blog Caveat Lector (2002-9) and now writes on a new blog on the subject of e-research, The Book of Trogool. Her presentation entitled Grab a bucket – it’s raining data was videoed under difficult lighting conditions; the footage which favours the speaker’s slides in such conditions is now available as Part 1 and Part 2.
