Representation information registries promise to make life much easier for those trying to interpret unfamiliar digital files. In his briefing paper, Alex Ball of UKOLN looks at a selection of existing file format and XML schema registries, as well as some of the more advanced registries currently being developed. This paper is one of a number of state-of-the-art reviews being written for the KIM Grand Challenge Project.

A poster entitled “Personalization and Accessibility: Integration of Library and Web Approaches”, co-authored by Ann Chapman and Brian Kelly of UKOLN, Liddy Nevile of La Trobe University and Andy Heath, consultant, formed part of the poster exhibition at the recent 15th International World Wide Web Conference.

UKOLN currently has two vacancies: Technical Manager and Systems Support Co-ordinator. The closing date for both applications is 22 June 2006.

Ann Chapman of UKOLN has taken on this role following the resignation of the previous chair, Sally Strutt of the British Library. The Committee is responsible for UK input into the creation of “Resource Description and Access” (RDA), the new edition in preparation of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR).

Slides are now available from the presentation entitled “Digital Archiving” to the East Anglia Online User Group (EAOLUG) given by Maureen Pennock of UKOLN. The event, called “Digital Archives and Records Management”, took place at the Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, on 23 May 2006.

Netskills are running a workshop entitled “Database Design and SQL” at the University of Bath as a precursor to the Institutional Web Management
Workshop 2006. Places are still available for this 1-day workshop which begins at 9.30a.m. on Tuesday 13 June.
