Open Science in the Data Decade
May 4th, 2010 by lisrwDr Liz Lyon, UKOLN Director and Associate Director of the Digital Curation Centre, University of Bath, explores some of the opportunities and challenges of a data-driven world in a short article Open Science in the data decade in the latest issue of Central Government magazine. She describes aspects of open data including consumer-sharing of personal genomic information and citizen science, and contrasts this with the relatively closed data from much publicly funded research. Harnessing the capacity of the crowd in curating data and incentivising contributions through new credit frameworks are referenced. The activities of the JISC-funded Digital Curation Centre
in providing advocacy, good practice guidance and community training are highlighted, together with potential new data informatics roles for the 21st century. Liz is also author of the consultative report Open Science at Web-Scale: Optimising Participation and Predictive Potential.
Winner of John M Slatin Award at W4A 2010

The World of Data According to Dorothea Salo
April 22nd, 2010 by lisrwUKOLN was delighted to be able to host a thought-provoking presentation by Dorothea Salo, Digital Repository Librarian for the University of Wisconsin, who has been visiting the UK in the past week or so. Featured by The Library Journal as one of its Movers & Shakers, Dorothea is noted for her blog Caveat Lector (2002-9) and now writes on a new blog on the subject of e-research, The Book of Trogool. Her presentation entitled Grab a bucket – it’s raining data was videoed under difficult lighting conditions; the footage which favours the speaker’s slides in such conditions is now available as Part 1 and Part 2.
Keynote Speakers at JISC/CNI 2010
April 21st, 2010 by lisrwLiz Lyon will be a keynote speaker at the JISC/CNI Meeting 2010 recently announced by JISC and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) which will take place over 1-2 July 2010 and will be held at the Barcelo Carlton Hotel, Edinburgh. The conference will be organised by UKOLN and will bring together experts from the United States, Europe and the United Kingdom. The conference theme this year is Managing Data in Difficult Times: policies, strategies, technologies and infrastructure to manage research and teaching data in a fast changing technological and economic environment. Conference keynote speakers include: Dan Atkins, Professor and Associate Vice President, University of Michigan, Sayeed Choudhury, Associate Director for Library Digital Programs, John Hopkins University, Heather Joseph, Executive Director, SPARC and Liz Lyon, Director, UKOLN.
