Enabling Research Data Management at the Coalface
July 7th, 2010 by lisrwLiz Lyon, Director of UKOLN and Associate Director, DCC will be contributing to a session on The Challenge of Large Data: Dataset Citation, Curation, and Management at the Microsoft Research Faculty Summit 2010 to be held in Redmond, Washington, USA over 12-13 July 2010. The event will bring together more than 400 thought leaders from academia, government, and Microsoft to reflect on how current computing disciplines open new opportunities for research and development. Liz will be speaking on behalf of the UK Digital Curation Centre (DCC) which is providing advocacy, guidance and tools for research data management to the UK Higher Education community, as well as running a portfolio of R&D projects to understand data curation challenges at the coalface. Her presentation, entitled UK Digital Curation Centre: Enabling research data management at the coalface, will look at three DCC data exemplars:
- Data citation of complex predictive network models of disease;
- Crystallography data flows across institutional borders from laboratory to synchrotron; and
- Emerging Data Management Planning tools for institutions and faculty.
Web 2.0 and Libraries: Impacts, Technologies and Trends

Mind the Gap: Reflections on Data Policies and Practice
July 2nd, 2010 by lisrwLiz Lyon, Director of UKOLN, recently gave a presentation at the annual JISC/CNI Meeting held in the Carlton Hotel, Edinburgh. Entitled Mind the Gap: Reflections on Data Policies and Practice, her talk explored open science and data policies from an institutional perspective and focused in particular on the perceived gaps between policy and practice. She also provided snapshots of both current practice and future data policy challenges, and described progress with DCC Data Management Planning tools and guidance, to help researchers manage their data more effectively. UKOLN to Lead on the LOCAH Linked Data Project
July 1st, 2010 by lisrwUKOLN has been successful in securing funding for a 12-month Linked Data project in response to the recent JISC Grant Funding Call 2/10 to expose digital content for education and research as linked data. The LOCAH Project (full title ‘Linked Open Copac Archives Hub) will be led by UKOLN in partnership with Mimas, Eduserv, Talis and OCLC, and will be managed by Adrian Stevenson at UKOLN. The Archives Hub and Copac national services provide a wealth of rich inter-disciplinary information that the project will expose as Linked Data. The project will also be investigating the creation of links between the Hub, Copac and other data sources including DBPedia, data.gov.uk and the BBC, as well as links with OCLC for name authorities and with the Library of Congress for subject headings. This project aims to put archival and bibliographic data at the heart of the Linked Data Web, making new links between diverse content sources, enabling the free and flexible exploration of data and enabling researchers to make new connections between subjects, people, organisations and places to reveal more about our history and society.
Two Digital Preservation Papers at iPRES2010
July 1st, 2010 by lisrwBrian Kelly and Marieke Guy of UKOLN have received notification that two papers have been accepted by the 7th International Conference on Preservation of Digital Objects (iPRES2010). One paper considers the challenges of archiving professional blogs which are hosted by blog platforms in the Cloud. The second paper describes the technical and policy issues related to the archiving of Twitter posts (tweets) which are being addressed by the JISC-funded development of the Twapper Keeper service.
