SaaSy APIs at Museums and the Web 2009

A paper by Paul Walk of UKOLN entitled Software as a Service and Open APIs has been accepted for the M2009 Museums and the Web Conference to be held in Indianapolis, USA over 15-18 April 2009. This paper will form the background to a mini-workshop APIs – how and why which will be conducted by his colleague Brian Kelly. The workshop will consider ways in which open APIs and Software as a Service (SaaS) are being exploited within the sector and seek a better understanding of the best approaches to take to maximise the potential benefits of this technology.

The Tools of Our Trade: AACR2/RDA and MARC

Ann Chapman of UKOLN recently gave a guest lecture on Resource Description and Access (RDA) to students taking the cataloguing module of the Library and Information Science course at London Metropolitan University. Entitled “The Tools of Our Trade: AACR2/RDA and MARC”, the lecture covered the history behind RDA, the international collaborative process by which it is being developed, an overview of the text and a look at the RDA approach to cataloguing. This was followed by an overview of the history and development process for the MARC format. Slides from this presentation are now available.

e-Science Institute Workshop: Use Cases for Provenance

The e-Science Institute (eSI) has announced a workshop entitled “Use Cases for Provenance” to take place in Edinburgh on Monday 20 April in Edinburgh. The aim of the workshop is to identify usage scenarios, open problems and ambitious goals for research concerning provenance in eScience and scientific data management. The workshop will be of interest to: scientific disciplines in which sophisticated database, Grid, or eScience technology is already in widespread use; disciplines where such technology is not widely used but conceivably will be in the future, and; to researchers and developers working on provenance and scientific data management or eScience technology. Speakers will include Alex Ball of UKOLN who will be presenting on the role of provenance in Engineering industries. The registration deadline is 13 April.

Reinventing Science Librarianship

An article, entitled “Reinventing Science Librarianship: Themes from the ARL-CNI Forum” by Elisabeth Jones, has been published by the Association of Research Libraries in its new issue of “Research Library Issues” (formerly “ARL Bimonthly Report”). The article features an audio clip and cited material from Liz Lyon’s presentation at the October 2008 ARL/CNI E-Science Forum. An excerpt from the recording of her presentation “Transition or Transform? Repositioning the Library for the Petabyte Era” has been used in support of the article which is accompanied by three audio clips in all, illustrating remarks by Rick Luce, Clifford Lynch and Liz Lyon from their presentations to the Forum, and which the author considered of particular interest to readers

Repositories Support Project: The Future Landscape

Stephanie Taylor of UKOLN led a workshop at the latest RSP Services Day held at the University of Bath.

Entitled, “Repositories – The Future”, the workshop explored the possible repositories landscape of the future. Participants were encouraged not only to imagine the future, but to develop their own ideas and plans for shaping that future themselves.
