Appointment of UKOLN Deputy Director

Paul Walk has been appointed as Deputy Director of UKOLN.

This post will provide technical leadership, vision and strategic insight across a wide range of digital library contexts, for education and research and across the range of UKOLN activities ensuring that UKOLN addresses the requirements of its user communities.

UKOLN, as a JISC Innovation Support Centre, has responsibility for the support of innovation and development in JISC-funded programmes and projects, especially within the Information Environment, and in this context, Paul will be providing leadership, strategic co-ordination and oversight of all JISC-funded technical innovation activity at UKOLN.

Paul joined UKOLN in September 2007, as Technical Manager and Team Leader for the Software and Systems Team. Paul had previously worked for fifteen years in Higher Education in London, primarily in the development and provision of technical library and Web services.

Paul says of his appointment, “I’m delighted to have been offered this opportunity. At UKOLN I am fortunate in having colleagues who are individually talented and who, collectively, offer an extraordinary range of expertise. I look forward to helping to lead them in facing the very real challenges which lie ahead.”

CILIP Update Eyes Google Wave and Libraries

CILIP’s Library & Information Updateexternal link blog recently mentioned “an interesting guest post on a UKOLN blog – by David Jenkins, Assistant Librarian in the Electronic Resources Development Team at Manchester Metropolitan University – about” Google Wave and libraries. The UKOLN blog Cultural Heritage had featured a post by Marieke Guy of UKOLN in which she invited David to summarise his findings regarding Google Wave usage among librarians. In his postexternal link to the CILIP Update blog, Matthew Mezey, News Editor, Library + Information Update Magazine, noted in particular David’s conclusions at the end of his summary for Cultural Heritage.

Serving Digital Citizens

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN, spoke recently at the MLA/LGA Conference on modernisation of public library services entitled 1964 and all that: modernising your public library service. In the session on The Digital Future for Libraries Liz gave a short talk entitled Serving Digital Citizens: Public Libraries in the 21stC?. Slides from her talk are now available.

Open Science – the future for research?

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN and Associate Director of the Digital Curation Centre, has written a new report on Open Science as part of JISC’s ‘Research 3.0 – driving the knowledge economy’ activity which launches at the end of November. The consultative report, entitled Open Science at Web-Scale: Optimising Participation and Predictive Potential identifies open-ness, predictive science based on massive data volumes, and citizen involvement as being important features of tomorrow’s research practice.

Her locknote presentationexternal link entitled Open Science at Web Scale: breaking all boundaries? will seek to challenge our established notions of the research landscape by extending the boundaries to explore the full potential of 21st Century team science.
