Monday, June 29th, 2009Marieke Guy will be facilitating a workshop entitled Connecting Remote Workers at UCISA’s Advisory and Support Staff Symposium 2009 DEMOS . The symposium will take place from 7 – 8 July at the Aston Business School Conference Centre, Birmingham. The theme for this year is “It’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it”, so flexible ways of working will feature significantly.

Improving Services and Reducing Costs through Flexible Working
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009Marieke Guy, UKOLN Remote Worker Champion, will be presenting at a one-day workshop Improving Services and Reducing Costs through Flexible Working. The event organised by Public Sector Forums will take place at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, Birmingham on Tuesday 23 June 2009. Marieke, who was invited to speak as a consequence of her work on the Ramblings of a Remote Worker blog, will give a talk entitled How to Be a Connected Remote Worker in 10 Easy Steps. Resources from the day and follow-up blog posts will be published on her blog after the event.
Team Science at ICSTI 2009
Tuesday, June 9th, 2009Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN, spoke recently on Libraries and Team Science at the 2009 conference of the International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI) in Ottawa. In her presentation Liz examined the roles that libraries and information professionals can play in the changing landscape of multi-scale, multi-disciplinary and multi-skilled team science. Thursday, June 4th, 2009For the second year running, the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) will be hosting day of workshops in the lead-up to the 5th International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC 2009), 2-4 December 2009. The workshops will take place on 2 December at the Millennium Gloucester Hotel, London and will be followed by a drinks reception at the Natural History Museum .

Repositories Support Project Prized for Innovation

The Repositories Support Project (RSP) and SWORD both with UKOLN staff involvement won special prizes at the recent JISC Repositories and Preservation Meeting at the Aston Business School. Delegates were invited to vote for one project each in the Repositories and Preservation Programme that had been most innovative and had most impact. Voting took place either through a ballot box or via twitter. The results were announced during the evening dinner and there was general agreement among delegates that the two projects were deserving of recognition, though indeed all projects listed demonstrated elements of innovation and impact. SWORD Wins Innovation Award at JISC Event

The Simple Web-service Offering Repository Deposit (SWORD) Project , led by UKOLN, was named most innovative project at the recent JISC Repositories and Preservation conference at Aston Business School, as voted for by delegates from across the whole Programme. SWORD, whose partners include developers of the DSpace, EPrints, Fedora and IntraLibrary repository software platforms, plus the University of York and CASIS at the University of Wales, has created a mechanism for repositories to deposit and receive deposits via a standard protocol, thus making it possible for different repositories and other applications to move content around more easily. SWORD has received much interest, and a growing community of active developers is building, including Microsoft whose SWORD plug-in can support deposits direct to a repository from within Microsoft Word. FeedForward, a close second for the award, is also SWORD-compliant. Work on SWORD continues within the UKOLN suite of activities.
