MashSpa: The Mashed Library Event in Bath
Wednesday, August 25th, 2010The sixth Mashed Library event known as MashSpa will be held in Bath on Friday 29 October. Designed for librarians and technical staff, the one-day event is an opportunity for them to meet, share knowledge and create new mashups. The morning will be given over to a couple of talks while the afternoon will be dedicated to mashing and creating new ideas for your library. We would stress that no technical expertise is required of participants. Booking for this event is now open.

UKOLN Contribution to THE Article on “All about me, dot com”
Thursday, August 19th, 2010Brian Kelly was featured in an article published in the Time Higher Education entitled All about me, dot com. The article explored “the world of academics’ personal websites“. Brian made the point that “universities may lose access to material, such as posted lecture notes, if academics are operating outside the university domain. But then again, if IT services cannot cater for academics who want to manage their personal page in a more hands-on style, an exit from the university sphere might make sense.“

Practical Metadata for Repository Administrators
Monday, August 16th, 2010Stephanie Taylor of UKOLN gave a short presentation on the basics of metadata, followed by a workshop session on the practical application of structured metadata and collaborative tagging within institutional repositories, at the RSP Workshop for Repository Administrators. The event was held at Oxford University on 11 August 2010. Slides are available via the RSP website.
SageCite Project Funded to Test a Framework for Citation of Network Models
Friday, August 6th, 2010SageCite, funded by JISC through the Managing Research Data Programme, will develop and test a Citation Framework of network models of disease and associated data, linking data, methods and publications. The domain of bio-informatics provides a case study, and the project builds on existing infrastructure and tools: myExperiment and the Sage Commons. Citations of complex network models of disease and associated data will be embedded in leading publications, exploring issues around the citation of data including the compound nature of datasets, description standards and identifiers. The project has international links with the Concept Web Alliance and Bio2RDF. The partners are UKOLN, the University of Manchester and the British Library (representing DataCite), with contributions from Nature Genetics and PLOS.
