Vice Chancellor Welcomes IDCC Back to the South-West

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

The International Digital Curation Conference, launched seven years ago in Bath, is returning to the South-West from 6 to 7 December 2011 with a two-day event taking place in Bristol. As major funders of research increasingly require grant applicants to submit data management plans, and with successful grant holders held accountable for the stewardship of often irreplaceable digital resources, universities are under increasing pressure to improve the data management techniques of research staff.

Now in its seventh year, the International Digital Curation Conference will give people involved in data creation and management an opportunity to get together with like-minded data practitioners to discuss policy and practice. The event will be opened with a pre-conference drinks reception and welcome address from Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bath, on 5 December at the SS Great Britain.

Professor Breakwell said: “Digital curation is becoming an increasingly important issue for universities. There is a requirement for the HE sector to adapt its infrastructure to support the management of data and to equip data practitioners with the skills they need to fulfil their stewardship obligations.”

The Vice Chancellor, who has recently witnessed the award to Bath by The Sunday Times of “University of the Year”, went on to say, “I am pleased to be welcoming the International Digital Curation Conference, launched for the first time seven years ago in Bath, back to the South-West. I am sure the event will be extremely informative and contribute to the sector’s continued progress in digital data management.”

The programme will include invited speakers in plenary sessions, together with an interactive afternoon during which posters, demonstrations, a symposium and informal meetings will take place. There will also be presentations and discussion about peer-reviewed papers covering all types of digital curation research and scholarship. The conference, which is being organised by UKOLN as part of its partnership with the DCC, will take place at the Marriott Royal Hotel in Bristol. A full programme and registration details are available on the Digital Curation Centre Web site.

New DCC Guide: How to Cite Datasets and Link to Publications

Friday, October 21st, 2011

The UK Digital Curation Centre (DCC) has published the fourth in its series of how-to guides: How to Cite Datasets and Link to Publications by Alex Ball and Monica Duke of UKOLN and the DCC.

This guide explains how researchers can create links between their publications and the underlying data, so that each can be found from the other. It also provides advice for repository managers and data archivists wishing to make their data holdings easier to cite.

The new guide is available for online reading or download from the DCC Web site.

7th International Digital Curation Conference Extends CfP

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

IDCC11 Programme Committee Co-chairs Kevin Ashley, Director, Liz Lyon, Associate Director of the DCC and Clifford Lynch, Executive Director of CNI, have announced they are extending the Call for Papers of the 7th International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC). In their announcement they stated, “Following widespread demand, we have extended the closing date for submissions to this year’s International Digital Curation Conference, IDCC11.”

Mindful of the very international nature of the Conference, they were careful to stipulate the deadline according to the provenance of Conference submissions. “The new closing date and time is Wednesday 3rd August at 08:00 UK Time. That’s .. early hours of Wednesday morning for those on the US East Coast, late Tuesday night for those far West and Wednesday afternoon for those far enough East.” They also made it clear that no further extension could be entertained, stating, “Holidays and other scheduling constraints mean that we can’t consider any further extensions: this date is final.”

The IDCC11 CfP included the following topics:

* Lessons learned from the inter-disciplinary use of open data:
examples of enablers, barriers and success stories
* Curation of mixed data collections, with open and sensitive or private content
* Gathering evidence for benefits of data sharing
* Building capacity for the effective management, sharing and reuse of open data
* Scale issues in the management of sensitive data
* Tensions between maintaining quality and openness
* Linked data, open data, closed data and provenance
* Technical and organisational solutions for data security
* Developing new metrics for open data
* Ethical issues and personal data
* Legislation and open data

to which has subsequently been added an extra issue:
* Data quality

ACCI Task Forces Report

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

The six task forces established by the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastucture (ACCI) have recently approved the final drafts of the reports on the areas in which they were asked to suggest recommendations and ideas for advancing cyberinfrastructure in support of NSF research. Those areas were:

  • Campus Bridging
  • Cyberlearning and Workforce Development
  • Data and Visualization
  • Grand Challenges
  • High Performance Computing
  • Software for Science and Engineering

These task forces were each led by ACCI members and their membership included a cross-section of members from both academic and industrial communities. Over a two-year period the task forces gathered broad community input via open workshops and meetings, solicitation of white papers, and other outreach efforts. Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN and Associate Director, Digital Curation Centre, is a member of the ACCI Task Force on Data and Visualization. All six reports are available from the NSF Office of Cyberinfrastructure (OCI) Web site.

IDCC11: Call for Papers

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

The theme of the 7th International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC11) will be Public? Private? Personal? navigating the open data landscape. It will take place this year in Bristol, UK over 5 – 7 December 2011.

Digital curation manages, maintains, preserves, and adds value to digital information throughout its lifecycle, reducing threats to long-term value, mitigating the risk of digital obsolescence and enhancing usefulness for research and scholarship. IDCC11 will bring together practitioners who create information, those who curate and manage it, and those who use it together with those who research and teach about curation processes.

In its Call for Papers the IDCC11 Programme Committee invites submissions on current concerns in digital curation and specific concerns arising from our conference theme.
