All presentations from the Networked Knowledge Organization Systems/Services (NKOS) workshop held at ECDL 2006 on 21 September are now available. They include FAO, HILT and semantic digital library projects, semantic components indexing, hyperbooks, wikipedia categories, a theory of retrieval using structured vocabularies and a new effort to develop a KOS Typology.

The potential of PKI for digital signature of metadata records
Friday, September 22nd, 2006A paper by Emma Tonkin of UKOLN has been accepted for inclusion in the forthcoming Dublin Core Conference 2006. The paper, entitled “Signed metadata : method and application”, explores the potential use of a public-key infrastructure (PKI) for digital signature of metadata records. Julie Allinson of UKOLN will present the paper on Emma”s behalf on 6 October.
Exploiting the Potential of Wikis: UKOLN Workshop
Wednesday, September 20th, 2006Places are still available on a UKOLN workshop on “Exploiting the Potential of Wikis” which will address a variety of issues in the context of their use in Higher Education institutions. These will include how they relate to other technologies, the sustainability and support of Wikis, and their evaluation and deployment. This workshop will be held at Austin Court, Birmingham on Friday 3 November 2006.
Special Session on ePrints at DC 2006
Wednesday, September 20th, 2006Julie Allinson of UKOLN and Andy Powell of the Eduserv Foundation will be chairing a special session on metadata for scholarly publications (eprints) at the forthcoming Dublin Core conference in Mexico on 4 October 2006. The session will present work undertaken in the UK to develop a DC application profile for describing eprints. This work is unusual in that it has adopted FRBR as the underlying model, using the DC Abstract Model notion of a “description set” to capture a set of related descriptions about each of the main FRBR entities.

Google or Bust: Challenging the Profession
Thursday, September 14th, 2006This will be the theme of the CILIPS/SLAINTE conference on electronic information and libraries to be held in Dundee on 27 September 2006. Maureen Pennock of UKOLN will run a session entitled “From Digital Creation to Digital Curation” which will explore the challenges of managing digital cultural heritage resources in regional and local libraries to ensure preservation and accessibility.
