The first Collection Description Focus workshop explores the concept of the collection, and how it is interpreted and deployed within the different traditions of information management. Thursday 1 November 2001 – Staff House, Manchester Conference Centre, UMIST, Manchester. Places are still available.

The DC-2001: International Conference on Dublin Core recently took place in Tokyo. UKOLN participated in the workshop and conference, alongside other members of the Dublin Core community.

This Manual will provide NOF project managers and team/consortia members with a range of guidelines and information to assist and support in the practical implementation of NOF funded digitisation projects. The Manual has been commissioned by NOF as a part of the nof-digitise Technical Advisory Service provided by UKOLN and the Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS).

The SCHEMAS project is hosting a one-day workshop on 30th November 2001 in The Hague to review means by which projects can share information about metadata in use, and to consider ways in which collaboration can be made more effective. This workshop is free so please book early to reserve your place.

TASI and UKOLN are running a one day workshop on Friday 23rd November entitled “You”ve digitised but now what?” that aims to help those who are running digitisation projects focus on ways of ensuring the longer-term sustainability of services and widening access to their collection.

“Architects of the Information Age”, which reports on a recent UKOLN-organised event at the Office of the e-Envoy, and explores the need
for an architecture to scope what we build online. Tracy Gardner also contributes “An Introduction to Web Services.”

Feature articles include an introduction to CORDIS, the European Commission”s Research and
Development Information Service; a piece on how Stockholm”s Telemuseum gets teenagers interested in Cultural heritage and an article by members of CIMI, re:source and UKOLN on scope for greater collaboration among cultural content creation programmes.

A Library Association Cataloguing and Indexing Group / UKOLN seminar to be held at Manchester Metropolitan University on Wednesday 31st October.
Focusing on the National Database of Resources in Accessible Formats, the seminar will look at the background and progress of the REVEAL project, the
cataloguing issues relevant to accessible format materials and a collections register for the sector.
