3rd International Digital Curation Conference in Washington DC

The CNI, DCC and NSF have announced that the 3rd International Digital Curation Conference will be held in Washington DC over 12-13 December 2007 following the Fall 2007 CNI Task Force meeting. The theme this year is “Curating our Digital Scientific Heritage: a Global Collaborative Challenge”. The conference will focus on emerging strategy, policy
implementation, leading-edge research and practitioner experience. It will comprise peer-reviewed papers, invited presentations and keynote international speakers.

Briefing paper on Adobe XMP now available

The eXtensible Metadata Platform (XMP) from Adobe is a way of embedding Resource Description Framework (RDF) style metadata within digital images and documents, and is becoming popular in the area of digital asset management. A briefing paper on the capabilities of XMP, written by Alex Ball of UKOLN for the KIM Grand Challenge Project, is now available for public viewing.

Last weekend”s Financal Times Magazine carried an article by this name on the perils and risks of digital archiving, particularly of e-mails. The article features comments and quotations from a wide range of experts in the preservation, libraries and archives community, including members of the Digital Curation Centre.

Liz also spoke on the findings of the JISC work she has been conducting, investigating the relationships between institutions and their data, institutional repositories and data centres. Managing and preserving insitutional digital assets

Maureen Pennock, DCC Research Officer at UKOLN, contributed to this session at the Annual JISC Conference by speaking on the outcomes of a synthesis exercise on the JISC Digital Preservation and Asset Management Programme. Maureen introduced a range of tools, prototype services and examplars that were developed by projects funded within this programme that can be used to help institutions tackle the challenges of digital preservation and digital asset management.
