UKOLN Research Awarded Best Paper at ELPUB 2013

A paper authored by Emma Tonkin, Stephanie Taylor and Greg Tourte entitled ‘Cover Sheets Considered Harmful‘ was granted the Best Paper award at the 17th International Conference on Electronic Publishing (ELPUB 2013). Based on work completed alongside the Jisc-funded FixRep Project, this paper explores the motivations and facts underlying the use of repository tools to alter items following their deposit in an institutional repository.

Preparing for Effective Adoption and Use of Ebooks in Education

The final version of the TechWatch report entitled Preparing for Effective Adoption and Use of Ebooks in Education is now available.

Updated in light of feedback received from a preview version released in September, this report is a primer to help academic librarians, managers, and members of faculty respond effectively as ebooks become mainstream and the percentage of academic publications delivered as ebooks rises steadily.

The report aims to support the adoption of ebooks by:

introducing the historical and present context of ebooks
reviewing the basics of ebook technologies
considering scenarios for ebook adoption and usage
addressing current challenges
considering future developments.

Published by JISC Observatory and written by commissioned author James Clay (Gloucestershire College) with production editing and project management provided by UKOLN Innovation Support Centre, this is the fourth in a series of TechWatch reports published since 2011.

ISC: Interviews with Innovators

This week the Innovation Support Centre at UKOLN has published a series of interviews with innovators. Adrian Stevenson of Mimas discusses work using Linked Data, David Shotton of the University of Oxford discusses work extending semantic publishing to enrich research literature and research data, and Andrew Laughland of the University of Hertfordshire discusses the potential for academic researchers to transform data-gathering via smart phone technology.

The Patients Participate! Project has released two documents for open community review. The first is a guide to writing Lay Summaries, and forms part of the DCC series of How-To Guides, pitched at an intermediate level, offering practical advice. The second draft released for comment is a Briefing Paper on Citizen Science, also being released as part of the DCC Briefing Papers series. Both documents can be reviewed using the A.nnotate Web site which supports interactive commenting. The papers can be navigated through the page index which appears after hovering with the mouse underneath the pdf link at the top left of the A.nnotate page.

Monica Duke will be speaking about the Patients Participate! Project at the Scholarly Outreach, Impact and Outcomes: The Sixth UCL Bloomsbury Conference being held on 28-29 June 2012. The project investigated the feasibility of crowd-sourced lay summaries of scholarly articles between April and October 2011.

The Changing Role of the Developer in HE

Data Repositories Workshop at OR2012

The Digital Curation Centre (DCC) in collaboration with the wider Research Data Management community is organising a free workshop on institutional data repositories in conjunction with Open Repositories 2012 , to be held in Edinburgh.

Community Capability Model Framework White Paper

The Community Capability Model Framework is a tool developed by UKOLN, University of Bath, and Microsoft Research. Its aims are to assist institutions, research funders and researchers in: growing the capability of their communities to perform data-intensive research by profiling the current readiness or capability of the community; indicating priority areas for change and investment; and developing roadmaps for achieving a target state of readiness.

A community consultation process was undertaken by the project to develop the framework, including workshops and mini case studies. The result of that process is now captured in a draft of the framework and you are invited to comment on the white paper through the A.nnotate system. The A.nnotate system supports interactive commenting, and the paper can be navigated through the page index which appears after hovering with the mouse underneath the pdf link at the top left.
