Tuesday, October 16th, 2012Liz Lyon and Kenji Takeda gave a presentation entitled What is a Data Scientist? to the recent Microsoft eScience Workshop in Chicago in which they explained about the Community Capability Model Framework, funded by Microsoft Research. The Framework has attracted considerable interest including from the US NSF EarthCube initiative in its recent document EarthCube Roadmap. Slides from Liz and Kenji’s presentation to the Workshop are now available from the UKOLN Web site.
Open Data Hack Days

Microsoft eScience Workshop 2012: What Is a Data Scientist?
Monday, October 1st, 2012Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN and Kenji Takeda of Microsoft Research will give a presentation entitled What Is a Data Scientist? at the forthcoming Microsoft eScience Workshop 2012. The ninth annual Microsoft eScience Workshop will be held over 8 and 9 October at the Hyatt Regency Chicago in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on eScience 2012. Discussions and presentations will once again relate to the theme of eScience in Action. Each year, the workshop provides a forum for scientists and researchers to share their experiences and expertise with the academic and research communities.
TechWatch Report on eBooks in Education: Call for Comments

ISC: Interviews with Innovators
Friday, September 21st, 2012This week the Innovation Support Centre at UKOLN has published a series of interviews with innovators. Adrian Stevenson of Mimas discusses work using Linked Data, David Shotton of the University of Oxford discusses work extending semantic publishing to enrich research literature and research data, and Andrew Laughland of the University of Hertfordshire discusses the potential for academic researchers to transform data-gathering via smart phone technology.

Launch of JISC TechWatch Report: Preparing for Data-driven Infrastructure
Monday, September 17th, 2012The JISC Observatory has published a report on “Preparing for Data-driven Infrastructure” which offers institutions advice on approaches to managing the increasing demands on their business and other data.
The report describes ways in which institutions can respond to strategic drivers in order to adopt a more data-centric approach across a range of development activities. The report includes a description of data-centric architectures, an overview of tools and technologies including APIs, Linked Data and NoSQL, together with a review of architectural approaches which institutions will need to consider when responding to requirements for greater transparency in their business processes.

Exploiting Research Data for Teaching at ALT-C 2012
Monday, September 10th, 2012Cathy Pink of UKOLN and Jez Cope of the University of Bath, both members of the JISC-funded Research360 Project, will be running a workshop entitled Exploiting Research Data for Teaching (Workshop 188) on 11 September 2012 at the ALT-C 2012 Conference in Manchester. This workshop will explore how research data can be exploited for learning and teaching in Further and Higher Education, addressing the following questions:
- What is research data?
- How can data be exploited for teaching and learning?
- Where can I find suitable data?
- What licence applies to the data and how do I comply?
- What contextual information is needed to make effective use of data?
