Supporting Research Data Management at ECDL 2010

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN and Associate Director, Digital Curation Centre, will facilitate the panel on Developing Services to Support Research Data Management and Sharingexternal link during ECDL 2010external link in Glasgow. The subject of the panel will be the current gap between the readiness of the current information environment to deal with large amounts of heterogeneous data and the disposition of academics in research institutions to update their practices of data management and curation. The panel will focus on this gap between digital library systems and researchers’ current practice in managing data and will explore appropriate services that can help to bridge it.

Registration for the 6th International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC) Now Open

Registration is now open for this year’s International Digital Curation Conference (IDCC). It will take place over 6-8 December in Chicago. The theme of the 2010 conference is Participation and Practice: Growing the Curation Community through the Data Decade. KIM, ERIM and the Silo of Doom

Alex Ball of UKOLN and the UK Digital Curation Centre gave a presentation entitled ‘KIM, ERIM and the Silo of Doom: lessons from two long-lived data projects’ at the DPC event ‘Designed to Last: Computer-Aided Design’, held at the British Library Centre for Conservation on 16 July 2010. Both the slides and a script for his presentation are now available.

Mashed Library 2010 – Chips and Mash

Julian Cheal of UKOLN will be giving a lightning talk as part of the Mashed Library 2010 – Chips and Mashexternal link programme offered at Mashed Library 2010, which will be held at Huddersfield University on 30 July 2010, on a few uses of RFID readers and Library data. The talk will mainly comprise demonstrations of some RFID code Julian has written.

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN and Associate Director, DCC will be contributing to a session on The Challenge of Large Data: Dataset Citation, Curation, and Managementexternal link at the Microsoft Research Faculty Summit 2010external link to be held in Redmond, Washington, USA over 12-13 July 2010. The event will bring together more than 400 thought leaders from academia, government, and Microsoft to reflect on how current computing disciplines open new opportunities for research and development. Liz will be speaking on behalf of the UK Digital Curation Centre (DCCexternal link) which is providing advocacy, guidance and tools for research data management to the UK Higher Education community, as well as running a portfolio of R&D projects to understand data curation challenges at the coalface. Her presentation, entitled UK Digital Curation Centre: Enabling research data management at the coalface, will look at three DCC data exemplars:

  • Data citation of complex predictive network models of disease;
  • Crystallography data flows across institutional borders from laboratory to synchrotron; and
  • Emerging Data Management Planning tools for institutions and faculty.
