e-Science Institute Workshop: Use Cases for Provenance

The e-Science Institute (eSI) has announced a workshop entitled “Use Cases for Provenance” to take place in Edinburgh on Monday 20 April in Edinburgh. The aim of the workshop is to identify usage scenarios, open problems and ambitious goals for research concerning provenance in eScience and scientific data management. The workshop will be of interest to: scientific disciplines in which sophisticated database, Grid, or eScience technology is already in widespread use; disciplines where such technology is not widely used but conceivably will be in the future, and; to researchers and developers working on provenance and scientific data management or eScience technology. Speakers will include Alex Ball of UKOLN who will be presenting on the role of provenance in Engineering industries. The registration deadline is 13 April.

Ariadne Issue 58 was published recently with articles, among others, by Derek Law on Strathclyde’s Digital Library Plan and a call by Stephen G. Nichols to dismantle the the Silo Model of Digital Scholarship. Ann Borda reports on an eResearch Strategic Initiative in Australia while Frances Boyle, Alexandra Eveleigh and Heather Needham describe the recent digital preservation initiatives in the local authority archives sector. Georg Eckes and Monika Segbert describe the European Film Gateway, a Best Practice Network funded under the eContentplus Programme of the European Commission. Helen Brady writes on the next phase of the MrCute repository project and its potential impact on the digital learning object-sharing community. Talat Chaudhri of UKOLN makes a detailed assessment of the FRBR structure of the Dublin Core Application Profiles funded by JISC while his colleague Julian Cheal gives his impressions of the five days of dev8D: JISC Developer Happiness.

Ann Chapman of UKOLN recently gave a guest lecture on RDA to students taking the cataloguing module of the Library and Information Science course at University College London (UCL). Entitled “RDA: cataloguing in the 21st century”, the lecture covered the history behind RDA, the international collaborative process by which it is being developed, an overview of the text and a look at the RDA approach to cataloguing. Slides from this presentation are now available.

500 posts have been published on the UK Web Focus blog since it was launched in November 2006, an average of over 4 posts per week. The blog, which is written by Brian Kelly, provides a dissemination channel and forum for discussion and debate on a variety of Web-related issues including standards, accessibility and best practice for exploiting the potential of Web 2.0.  Last year the blog was awarded a UCISA prize as a case study for best practices in communicating with users and was short-listed for the Best educational tech support blog category of the Edublog 2008 awards.
