Opportunities for and Barriers to Engineering Research Data Re-use

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

The ERIM (Engineering Research Information Management) Project has released its third deliverable, a report entitled Opportunities for and Barriers to Engineering Research Data Re-use. Within the six engineering studies examined by the report, there were found to be different opportunities for data re-use depending on whether the researchers were simply characterising a scenario or testing possible improvements. A range of barriers were encountered, ranging from commercial sensitivity to specialist hardware platforms. The ERIM Project is part of the JISC’s Managing Research Data Programme, looking at data management planning in EPSRC-funded projects. It is a collaboration between the Innovative design and Manufacturing Research Centre (IdMRC) at the University of Bath and UKOLN, representing the DCC.

Understanding and Characterizing Engineering Research Data for its Better Management

Monday, October 18th, 2010

The ERIM (Engineering Research Information Management) Project has released a report entitled Understanding and Characterizing Engineering Research Data for its Better Management. The report introduces a new technique for modelling research activity information development and uses it to analyse the data records from six engineering studies. This modelling technique is supported by the ERIM Data Management Terminology as set out in the report.

Supporting Research Data Management at ECDL 2010

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN and Associate Director, Digital Curation Centre, will facilitate the panel on Developing Services to Support Research Data Management and Sharingexternal link during ECDL 2010external link in Glasgow. The subject of the panel will be the current gap between the readiness of the current information environment to deal with large amounts of heterogeneous data and the disposition of academics in research institutions to update their practices of data management and curation. The panel will focus on this gap between digital library systems and researchers’ current practice in managing data and will explore appropriate services that can help to bridge it.
