Slides from Maureen Pennock”s presentation entitled “Digital archives or digital archaeology? Dealing with the Digital”, given at the Liverpool University Centre for Archive Studies (LUCAS) event “Preserving Digital Archives” are now available.

The Spring issue of “Focus on UKOLN”, the Newsletter which provides news, opinion and information on the wide range of activities undertaken by UKOLN is now available in print and on the UKOLN Web site.

A vacancy has arisen for the position of Events Administrative Assistant. The closing date for applications is 5 April 2006.

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN, gave a presentation on “Supporting Digital Curation to safeguard research data: adding value today and ensuring long-term access” at a session of the recent annual JISC Conference from which slides are now available.

Maureen Pennock of UKOLN will be speaking at a one-day event organised by the Liverpool University Centre for Archive Studies (LUCAS)
entitled “Preserving Digital Archives”. The event is designed for professionals focusing on the technological, financial, legal, and organisational challenges faced by repositories receiving digital deposits and takes place on Wednesday 22 March 2006.

The Big Lottery Fund has recently signed an agreement with MLA to ensure the future development of the searchable portal developed in collaboration with UKOLN which also advised participating projects through its co-operation with AHDS in the NOF-digi Technical Advisory Service.

The 5th European Networked Knowledge Organization Systems (NKOS) Workshop will be held at ECDL 2006 on 21 September, 2006, in Alicante, Spain. One of the primary features will be a “Semantic Web Special Session”.

This special issue of the International Journal on Digital Libraries (IJDL), published by Springer, will critically examine the role that digital libraries can and should play in the emerging eScience infrastructure. The submission deadline is 1 June 2006. See Call for Papers page for contacts.

The DCC will be holding a workshop entitled “Email curation: practical approaches for long-term preservation and access” over 24-25 April 2006 in Newcastle. This workshop will benefit individuals and institutions that are interested in applying a records management approach to the effective management of e-mail.

Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN, will speak on “Supporting digital curation to safeguard research data” in a session which will look at the issues related to digital information and how effective digital curation could help institutions to maintain and safeguard research data for years to come. The session begins at 3p.m.
