Presenting natiOnal Resources To Audiences Locally, a joint project with the University of Hull, is investigating ways to integrate external content within institutional portals. This project is funded under the JISC”s FAIR Programme.

Ariadne 33 is now available

This issue focuses on the “Information
Environment”: an idea which builds on earlier conceptions of the Digital Library. Ariadne looks at relevant work taking place on both sides of the
Atlantic: the issue features an article by Andy Powell on the practical aspects of becoming a content provider for the JISC IE. Ariadne also looks at the EDNER project (Jill Griffiths and Peter Brophy), which was created to provide evaluation services for the JISC IE. OCLC”s acquisition of netLibrary is also featured: Shirley Hyatt and Lynn Connaway explain how the acquisition offers opportunities to provide an enhanced IE, designed to function as a seamless and friendly package of resources for end-users.

The fourth Collection Description Focus Workshop will be held on Friday 8th November 2002, University of Newcastle, Castle Leazes Halls of Residence. The workshop will explore the relationship between collection-level description and collection management. This is a free event and will be of interest to practitioners including those describing collections or developing and implementing services which utilise such descriptions, those with an interest in the development and deployment of standards in this area and also information managers.

“Open Access to Hidden Resources” will bring together organizations in the archival and library fields to explore whether, and under what
conditions, the open archive approach is viable for these organisations, and to promote new collaborative links aimed at building interoperable infrastructures. Registration is now open, with a booking deadline of 1 November. An introductory tutorial on the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) is offered on the afternoon of 5 December.
