The Benefits of the ORCID ID to Researchers

UKOLN staff have recently worked with Jisc in supporting the take-up of the Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCID) by the research community. A recent post which explains Why every researcher should sign up for their ORCID ID has been published on the LSE Impact of Social Sciences blog. The post describes how ORCID is a non-profit effort providing digital identifiers to the research community to ensure correct authorship data are available and more transparent. The post also summarises the benefits to researchers who acquire their ORCID ID.

JISC RIM CERIF Workshop Report

The Innovation Support Centre at UKOLN (together with the JISC RIM and RCSI Programmes) organised a workshop in Bristol on 27-28 June 2012 on Research Information Management (RIM) and CERIF. UKOLN will host meetings in Bath on the the Common European Research Information Format (CERIF) in February 2012 as a means of supporting better understanding of the use and benefits of this model to the UK Higher Education community. UKOLN is hosting a series of meetings based on CERIF, the Common European Research Information Format, in co-operation with euroCRIS and JISC. The first is a CERIF tutorial and UK data surgery, to be held on 9 February 2012, followed by euroCRIS task group meetings on 10 February, both in the city of Bath. Participation is open, and all those involved in research information management are strongly encouraged to take the opportunity to strengthen their understanding of CERIF and explore real-life data scenarios, as well as to contribute UK experience to related euroCRIS task groups.

Free Conference Showcasing JISC-funded RIM Projects

A few places remain for the free conference showcasing the work of the second round of JISC-funded Research Information Management projects. It will be held at the Manchester Conference Centre on Tuesday 20 September 2011.

The JISC Research Information Management (RIM) Projects Final Event has been organised by JISC and UKOLN and aims to present the work of the following JISC-funded Research Information Management Strand 2 final projects:

Brunel Research Under a CERIF Environment (BRUCE) – Brunel University
CERIFy – UKOLN, University of Bath
Integrated Research Input and Output System (IRIOS) – University of Sunderland
Measuring Impact under CERIF (MICE) – Centre for e-Reseach (CeRch), Kings College London

The day will start with an overview of the strand, including its aims and objectives. This will be followed by a sneak preview of each of the projects’ findings, where each of the projects will seek to persuade delegates to come to their sessions. After the break, four parallel sessions will be held involving all projects; these sessions will be repeated in the afternoon. Therefore delegates will have an opportunity to visit at least two project sessions during the day.

Following the afternoon project sessions, there will be a number of presentations from projects that are building on the Research Information Management strand (e.g. from RMAS, Research Council, etc). The day will end with a plenary discussion focusing on the way forward.

JISC and UKOLN are organising a free conference to showcase the work of the second round of JISC-funded Research Information Management (RIM) projects. The conference is free and will be held at the Manchester Conference Centre on 20 September 2011.

The CERIFy Data Surgery

The CERIFy Project has produced a report on the recent CERIFy Data Surgery held for project partners in Bath. The JISC-funded CERIFy Project in which the lead partners are UKOLN and Trinity College Dublin, has announced the opening of its Web site. The CERIFy Project is funded by JISC from February to July 2011 to investigate how the CERIF (Common European Research Information Format) standard for Current Research Information Systems (CRISs) could be used more widely within the sector to manage research data, to increase such engagement to a critical mass, and to support an emerging community of practice in Research Information Management (RIM).
