A few places remain on the forthcoming Open Data Hack Days event organised by the new UK Open Data Institute and DevCSI. Open Data Hack Days will take place at the Open Data Institute, London over 25 – 26 October 2012.

DevCSI: Future Citations Hack Days

The JISC-funded Developer Community Supporting Innovation Project (DevCSI) together with the JISC Citation Data Directions Project are organising a free event for software developers, project managers, and experts in the area of Citation Data Analysis to take place over Thursday 27 and Friday 28 September 2012 in Birmingham. The Future Citations Hack Days include free accommodation and food and will help participants to form small teams to discuss issues and to work on paper and real prototypes, datasets and APIs. All participants will be able to share their own examples, expertise and opinions via the lightning sessions, discussions and informal networking opportunities.

DevCSI Developer Challenge at Open Repositories 2012

The DevCSI Project (funded by JISC and based at the Innovation Support Centre, UKOLN, University of Bath) is pleased to announce that it is once again organising the Open Repositories Developer Challenge 2012 at the Seventh International Conference on Open Repositories in Edinburgh, OR 2012. We are working closely with the Repositories Fringe and the Challenge is kindly sponsored by Microsoft Research. Please note hash tags #or12dev #devcsi

The Challenge is taking place between Tuesday 10 July and Thursday 12 July, 2012. The Challenge is:

Show us something new and cool in the world of Open Repositories.

The initial deadline for your entry will be 10a.m., Tuesday 10 July 2012, which means you can start on your entry now!

You will then have a chance to pitch your idea to an audience or experts who will give you feedback. You will then be able to make changes to your idea and re-present it to a panel of judges the next day, Wednesday 11 July 2012. Winning entrants will present to the conference on Thursday 12 July 2012.

Prize money of £1000 is available for the winners and runners-up. There is an additional prize for the entry that demonstrates the most innovative use of Microsoft Technology (.Net Gadgeteer kit) which can also be submitted to the main Challenge above. We are hoping that we will be able to provide an opportunity for the winning team to meet up to complete its entry after the conference so that the community can benefit from it.

New Event: Hacking Bibliographic Data

DevCSI in co-operation with the Open Biblio Project, Open GLAM and OKFN is seeking expressions of interest from software developers, project managers, librarians and experts in the area of bibliographic data in respect of a free event being planned for 12 – 14 June 2012 in London.

The event will offer anyone with a particular interest in bibliographic data the opportunity to discuss the issues they see as relevant in this area, experiment in a focused way on prototyping systems and even hacking them together. It also intends to encourage people to explore current ways of doing things and consider how they might be improved. It is hoped the event will give participants the chance to form small groups to discuss bibliographic data issues, work on paper and/or real prototypes, datasets and APIs. The event will culminate in a series of presentations from the teams in terms of the work they have carried out.

If you are interested in this area, please email Mahendra Mahey at UKOLN and indicate if you would like to attend. Please let him know of the aspects of bibliographic data in which you are interested, since your responses will influence the planning of the event.

Managing Research Data Hack Days in Manchester

The next Managing Research Data Hack Days will take place on 3 and 4 May 2012 in the Weston Room II at the Manchester Conference Centre. MRD Hack days are a free small event (which includes accommodation and food) for developers and experts who are interested in working on ideas in the area of Managing Research Data. These MRD days have been organised by DevCSI, the JISC Managing Research Data Programme and the JISC Orbital Project. They aim to bring together software developers, project managers, data librarians and experts particularly in the area of Managing Research Data.

We already have a number of ideas for hacks posted on the DevCSI Hack Days ideas page.

Dev8D 2012

Applications for Dev8D 2012 are coming close to capacity , but there are still a few places left. So, if you want to come, you will need to make your booking now.

Progress in the Data Citation Community

Writing in Issue 40, December 2011 of the DPC/DCC publication What’s New, Monica Duke of UKOLN and DCC reviews some of the developments and events which have brought together practitioners with an interest in scholarly communication, data citation and data publishing. In her editorial “The Data Citation Community Gathers Pace“, she suggests that a community is now forming and gathering pace.

DevCSI Life Sciences Hackdays

Another free DevCSI event, DevCSI Life Sciences Hackdays, will take place over 6-7 December 2011 in London.

This event is being organized by:

Developer Community Supporting Innovation Project (DevCSI)
Semantic Web Applications and Tools for Life Sciences (SWAT4LS)
Open Knowledge Foundation (OKF, Open Science Working Group)

The event will be suitable for:

Researchers in the Life Sciences
Software developers in the Life Sciences
Software developers / researchers developing Semantic Web Applications / Tools / Mashups / Visualisations from the Life Sciences and other domains
Anyone interested in developing and using Open Science tools particularly in the Life Sciences
Those offering support for using datasets, APIs and tools to be used for the delegates

The event will bring together delegates from the SWAT4LS workshop and tutorials (taking place 8-9 December 2011) and researchers, developers and anyone else interested in the Life Sciences to work together in teams or individually to use and enhance existing Open Science semantic web applications and tools – and possibly develop new ones.

Some ideas already being floated are in Malaria, Cancer and Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) research.
