This year”s conference will be held at the University of Bath, UK, from 12-17 September 2004. The deadline for papers now extended to 17 April.

Places are still available on the Manchester
(Thursday 22nd April), Edinburgh (Friday 14th May), and Nottingham (Monday 24th May 2004) workshops. The workshops will provide an introduction to eprints and institutional repositories and the issues surrounding them; they
are aimed at HE/FE librarians, information systems staff and academics and are free to attend.

UKOLN at the University of Bath is a partner in this major new initiative funded by the JISC and the eScience Core Programme. The Digital Curation Centre has funding of 1.3m pounds sterling a year to address the challenge of securing the future of digital data in a collaboration between the Universities and the Research Councils. Led by the University of Edinburgh, the Digital Curation Centre will be run by a consortium of four partner institutions: the University of Edinburgh (Informatics, Law, Information Services and leading research institutes) and the University of Glasgow (HATII and Information Services), which together host the National eScience Centre; UKOLN, at the University of Bath; the Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC – which operates the Rutherford and Daresbury Laboratories).
The Centre will have an active Research Programme funded by the EPSRC and will also provide JISC-funded development, advisory services and dissemination and outreach to the wider community.

Issue 38 of Ariadne carries articles related to metadata quality issues and metadata harvesting. Marieke Guy, Andy Powell and Michael Day address the argument that the usefulness of OAI service
providers is directly influenced by the consistency and accuracy of the harvested metadata on which they are based. Ed Summers provides practical examples of how to build OAI-PMH harvesters in Perl using the Net::OAI::Harvester toolkit; plus articles on Web accessibility, the 5-99 Programme, software, resources for Further Education and others.

The CD Focus will be holding a Collection Description Schema Forum at the CBI Conference Centre, Centre Point, London on Thursday 12th February 2004. The day will be a combination of presentations in the morning and discussion groups in the afternoon. The discussion groups will be looking at both strategic and implementation issues.
