A preliminary programme for the DC-2005 conference, to be held in Madrid from 12 to 15 September, is now online. The programme includes keynotes by Thomas Baker, Ricardo Baeza, Johannes Keizer and Eric Miller, presentations of 36 papers and project reports, a series of tutorials on metadata basics and numerous working group meetings. Early bird registration fees are available until 15 July.

A recent letter of proposal to create a European Digital Library has been welcomed by the DELOS Network of Excellence. The letter to the current European Council and Commission presidents from the French, Italian, Spanish, German, Polish and Hungarian heads of state proposes making works held in European libraries available online in a European digital library. Giving his reaction to the proposal, Costantino Thanos, scientific coordinator of the Network, remarked, “That all citizens, anywhere, anytime, should have access to Internet-connected digital devices to search all of human knowledge, regardless of barriers of time, place, culture or language has been the vision of DELOS since its inception.” He went on to state, “A European Digital Library is a step towards making this vision a reality.”

Bookings have now closed for this year”s Institutional Web Management Workshop, which will be held at the University of Manchester on 6-8 July.

This study reports on the feasibilty of developing applications to the WSRP (Web Services for Remote Portlets) standard. It was carried out as part of the GroupLog project by UKOLN, in conjunction with University of Bath Centre for the Development of New Technologies in Learning (CDNTL), and was funded under the JISC 03/04 call for projects to develop E-Learning Tools for learners and teachers. GroupLog is a tool for supporting collaborative group work and facilitating tutor feedback in large cohorts, developed at the University of Bath. The report covers a review of the WSRP standard, includes several links to related resources, and reports on practical implementation experience using RDN Include as a case study.

Registration is now open for this two-day workshop on distributed service registries.

UKOLN currently has vacancies for two support posts for the JISC Digital Repository Programme. The posts will support the programme in the application of standards and protocols, providing best practice guidelines and advice for the wider community based on programme outcomes.
