Brian Kelly will give a brief talk entitled “Web 2.0: The Potential of RSS and Location-Based Services” at a meeting on 4 September 2006 at the University of Edinburgh.

Michael Day will speak at the conference of the same name organised by the Ark Group, to be held over 26-28 September 2006. His subject will be “Applying flexibility to adapt for technological changes and practical considerations for implementing digital preservation strategies”. Michael will also facilitate a post-conference workshop on using metadata to support digital preservation.

The summer issue of Ariadne Web Magazine is now available with articles, among others, by Lorcan Dempsey and Robin Murray on the changing environment for library systems together with an introduction from Dan Chudnov and colleagues to a new HTTP API for serving information objects. Caroline Williams gives an overview of Intute while Martin Moyle introduces the ShibboLEAP Project, a multi-institution Shibboleth adoption in London. Alastair Dunning writes about the work of the AHDS which celebrates its tenth year this summer.

“Curating e-Science Data” is the most recent in a series of briefing papers to be published by the Digital Curation Centre. Authored by Maureen Pennock, this briefing paper identifies the benefits of curating e-Science data and the practical activities involved.

The Preservation Cluster of the EU-funded DELOS Network of Excellence is
hosting a free seminar for digital preservation specialists and
practitioners at the National Library of Estonia, Tallinn, over 4-5 September 2006. UKOLN is one of seven partners participating in the Preservation Cluster as well as in other DELOS work.

Ann Chapman will be one of the speakers at this event which will be held at the University of Lancaster over 6-7 September, 2006. Ann will speak on “First steps in metadata”.

Bookings are now open for the 2nd International Digital Curation Conference to be held at the Hilton Glasgow over 21-22 November 2006. The conference will explore the topic of Digital Data Curation in Practice. Keynote speeches will be made by Dr Hans F Hoffmann, CMS Team Leader, CERN and Clifford Lynch, Director of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI).

The International Council on Archives (ICA) Section on University and Research Institution Archives are holding this year”s seminar in Reykjavik, Iceland, over 13-20 September. The theme for the seminar will be “Shared Concerns and Responsibility for University Records and Archives”. Maureen Pennock will speak on “Collaboration as the keystone for successful management of digital records”.

Brian Kelly will co-facilitate a workshop session on “Enough Talking – Let”s Use the Next Generation Technologies!” at the ALT-C 2006 Conference at Heriott-Watt University, Edinburgh, to be held over 5-7 September 2006.
