Kelly Tells THE: More to University Web Sites than League Tables

In a letter published in the 2-8 September 2010 issue of Times Higher Education, Brian Kelly points out the limitations of publishing league tables for university Web sites. The challenge is not in jostling for position in an artificial league table, but ensuring that Web teams are willing to share best practice in exploiting the potential of the Social Web. Brian Kelly was featured in an article published in the Time Higher Education entitled All about me, dot com. The article explored “the world of academics’ personal websites“. Brian made the point that “universities may lose access to material, such as posted lecture notes, if academics are operating outside the university domain. But then again, if IT services cannot cater for academics who want to manage their personal page in a more hands-on style, an exit from the university sphere might make sense.“

Text Mining for Scholarly Communications and Repositories Joint Workshop

UKOLN is co-hosting an open workshop with the National Centre for Text Mining NaCTeM on 28-29 October 2009. The Joint Workshop will be held at the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre, University of Manchester. The Keynote presentation titled “eScience and Semantic Computing” will be given by Professor Tony Hey, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft External Research. Liz Lyon recently gave a presentation on behalf of the Digital Curation Centre and UKOLN at a Max Planck eScience Workshop in Goettingen, Germany. A year after the publication of the Dealing with Data Report, Liz brought the workshop up to date with a brief look at the changing landscape, a review of UK progress on data issues as well as a consideration of some new challenges and
opportunities in this area. Her presentation is now available.
