Two ISC Papers Presented at OR 2012

Two papers presented at Open Repositories 2012 were co-authored by staff of the Innovation Support Centre at UKOLN. The papers were entitled Open Metrics for Open Repositories by Brian Kelly, Nick Sheppard, Jenny Delasalle, Mark Dewey, Owen Stephens, Gareth Johnson and Stephanie Taylor and Can LinkedIn and Academia.edu Enhance Access to Open Repositories? by Brian Kelly and Jenny Delasalle. Data Repositories Workshop at OR2012

The Digital Curation Centre (DCC) in collaboration with the wider Research Data Management community is organising a free workshop on institutional data repositories in conjunction with Open Repositories 2012 , to be held in Edinburgh.

The workshop includes short presentations but the emphasis will be on informal and open discussion. Presentations will include an overview of activity in the UK as well as of the experience of US practitioners.

SWORDv2 Funded to Cover Wider Infrastructure

The SWORDv2 Project has been funded by JISC, under the Information Environment 2011 Programme, to extend repository deposit to cover the wider scholarly communication infrastructure. The project, led by UKOLN, will develop a second generation of the SWORD deposit protocol that will enable it to encompass a wider set of systems within the scholarly communication infrastructure, and to allow active management of artefacts as they change throughout their lifetime. Learning Repositories in Agriculture Food & Environment (AgLR 2010)

Stephanie Taylor of UKOLN will be participating in the e-conference Learning Repositories in Agriculture Food & Environment: Quality Promises and Considerations in Learning Repositories and Portals (AgLR 2010) which takes place 6-20 October 2010. The e-conference is hosted by the Agricultural Learning Repositories Task Force (AgLR-TF) and the e-Agriculture Community. As part of her work with the Metadata Forum, Stephanie will be joint moderator, along with Jackie Wickham of the Repository Support Project (RSP), of two discussions about the use of metadata in learning repositories. The e-conference is open to anyone with an interest in this area. Details on how to join in and further information on the topics to be discussed are available.

Free Research Data Management Workshops

The UK Digital Curation Centre is running a series of inter-linked regional workshops as part of the DCC Roadshow, designed to support institutional research data management planning and training. The 1st DCC Roadshow will be held on 2-4 November 2010 at the University of Bath. Further details are available.

Doing It Differently Conference

UKOLN Contribution to THE Article on “All about me, dot com”

Brian Kelly was featured in an article published in the Time Higher Education entitled All about me, dot com. The article explored “the world of academics’ personal websites“. Brian made the point that “universities may lose access to material, such as posted lecture notes, if academics are operating outside the university domain. But then again, if IT services cannot cater for academics who want to manage their personal page in a more hands-on style, an exit from the university sphere might make sense.“

Practical Metadata for Repository Administrators

Stephanie Taylor of UKOLN gave a short presentation on the basics of metadata, followed by a workshop session on the practical application of structured metadata and collaborative tagging within institutional repositories, at the RSP Workshop for Repository Administrators. The event was held at Oxford University on 11 August 2010. Slides are available via the RSP website.
