Engineering Research Data Management Planning Requirements
Monday, February 21st, 2011The ERIM (Engineering Research Information Management) Project has released four documents related to data management planning requirements. The first is a set of principles for engineering research data management. The second is a thematic analysis of the guidance given by five organisations on writing data management plans (DMPs). The outcomes of the analysis and the principles were used to construct a DMP requirement specification for engineering researchers and their departments. This in turn was used to plan support for DMP-writing in an engineering research centre at Bath, and provide specific DMP requirements for its researchers.
The ERIM Project is part of JISC’s Managing Research Data Programme, looking at data management planning in EPSRC-funded projects. It is a collaboration between the Innovative design and Manufacturing Research Centre (IdMRC) at the University of Bath and UKOLN, representing the Digital Curation Centre.

Shared Services in Cloud Computing to Be Funded by HEFCE
Monday, February 7th, 2011The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has announced a £12.5m programme to deliver efficiencies through shared services in cloud computing infrastructure and applications. This new programme, which will be managed by JISC, supports colleges and universities in the innovative use of digital technologies.
A core virtual server infrastructure (a ‘cloud’) will be set up to offer discounted data management and storage services to HE institutions. It will be deployed in data centres starting with a pilot at Eduserv, which will work in collaboration with the Digital Curation Centre.
As a partner in the Digital Curation Centre, UKOLN at the University of Bath is pleased to be contributing to this major new initiative to support research data management, working in partnership with the JISC, JANET and Eduserv. Further information is available from the HEFCE Web site.
