In support of this initiative, a Horizon 2020 consultation event entitled Open Infrastructures for Open Science will take place in Rome over 11-12 April 2012. Its discussions will focus on e-Infrastructures and e-Science in the context of the emerging Digital European Research Area. Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN, has been invited to take part in a panel entitled Opening science through e-infrastructures on 11 April 2012 at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.

There will be a particular focus on demonstrating the cost-benefits of effective data management and the relevance of different roles within organisations. A programme of expert speakers will share the experiences and outcomes from a range of pioneering JISC-funded projects, followed by panel discussion.

Full programme and registration details can be found on the I2S2 events page.

This workshop is to be co-located with the 6th Research Data Management Forum.

It will take place at University of London Union (ULU), Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HY. The workshop will bring together developers and non-technical practitioners to explore the issues around image-based metadata. Starting with a programme of lightning talks where participants can share experiences, explain problems and pitch ideas, the day will focus on providing participants with practical solutions to image metadata problems. The workshop offers a unique opportunity for participants from a technical and non-technical background to work together to find ways to improve the delivery of services dealing with images. The event requires no previous experience, just an interest in metadata and images, and a willingness to explore working together.

There will be a developer challenge focusing on how image metadata can best be used to deliver the services that real, front-line Web services such as repositories, online image stores, etc need to offer their users. Prizes will be awarded for the most innovative and successful solutions developed during Dev8D as part of this challenge.

Places are limited, so please book early! The booking form and programme are already available.

The Twitter hashtag for the event is: #dev8dpic

More information about Dev8D+ is available.

Why? How? which will be held at the JISC Conference at the BT Convention Centre in Liverpool on 15 March 2011.]]> Brian Kelly and Marieke Guy will be facilitating a workshop session on “Amplified Events, Seminars, Conferences, …: What? Why? How?” which will be held at the JISC Conference at the BT Convention Centre in Liverpool on 15 March 2011.

The abstract for the session is given below:

All institutions are involved in providing events, ranging from international conferences through to smaller and more informal seminars and workshops. But in today’s economic environment the costs of participating in such events may lead to concerns over their sustainability. ‘Amplified events’ provide an approach which enhances the advantages provided by traditional face-to-face events by exploiting networked technologies to widen participation to  remote participants and ‘time-shifting’ events.

This session will review a variety of approaches which have been taken at a number of national, international and regional events. The session will explore the reasons for such approaches, address possible concerns and outline various business models, policies and emerging technologies which can be used to maximise the benefits of amplified events.

The online booking form is available on the JISC Web site.
