Update on ‘Cookie’ Legislation

On Tuesday 13 December the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) published a blog post entitled “Half term report on cookies compliance” which announced the release of updated guidance on the Government’s ‘cookie’ legislation. The implications of the guidance for those responsible for providing institutional Web sites have been described in a post on “The Half Term Report on Cookie Compliance” which has been published on the UK Web Focus blog.

UK Web Focus Blog Runner-Up In IT Professional Blogger of the Year Award

The Computer Weekly Social Media Awards confirmed that UK Web Focus Blog is runner-up in ‘IT Professional Blogger of the Year‘ category for 2011.

UK Web Focus has been published by Brian Kelly since November 2006. In his 1,000^th post on this blog published earlier today, Brian announced this new award and highlighted the importance of openness in the sector as exemplified by this blog over its years of publication.

Amplified Events, Seminars, Conferences, …: What? Why? How?

Brian Kelly and Marieke Guy will be facilitating a workshop session on “Amplified Events, Seminars, Conferences, …: What? Why? How?” which will be held at the JISC Conference at the BT Convention Centre in Liverpool on 15 March 2011.

The abstract for the session is given below:

All institutions are involved in providing events, ranging from international conferences through to smaller and more informal seminars and workshops. But in today’s economic environment the costs of participating in such events may lead to concerns over their sustainability. ‘Amplified events’ provide an approach which enhances the advantages provided by traditional face-to-face events by exploiting networked technologies to widen participation to remote participants and ‘time-shifting’ events.

This session will review a variety of approaches which have been taken at a number of national, international and regional events. The session will explore the reasons for such approaches, address possible concerns and outline various business models, policies and emerging technologies which can be used to maximise the benefits of amplified events.

UKOLN Presentations at Online Information Conference 2010

Two presentations will be given by UKOLN staff at Online Information Conference 2010 to be held from 30 November to 2 December 2010 at Olympia, London. Brian Kelly will be talking on Moving from Personal to Organisational Use of the Social Web and Marieke Guy will give a presentation entitled Home, Work, Work, Home!? How Information Professionals Can Exploit Blurred Boundaries.

Institutional Web Services: Evidence for Their Value

An article by Val Skelton published in Information Today describes how “Users, funders and decision makers are asking tough questions about our products and services and we must be ready to respond with credible usage statistics.” The article leads with a summary of a talk entitled Monitoring and Maximising Organisational Impact given by Brian Kelly at last week’s Internet Librarian International 2010, who argued that the sector “should wholeheartedly embrace this demand for transparency by being clear and open about usage and impact.”

Brian Kelly has been featured in an interview published in El Punt, an online journal published in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The interview took place when Brian gave a seminar on What Can We Learn From Amplified Events? at the University of Girona on 3 September 2010. For those who do not understand the Catalan language an English language version is available which is produced by the Google Translate service. Although the quality of the translation is less than ideal, it does help to convey the underlying message.

Kelly Tells THE: More to University Web Sites than League Tables

The challenge is not in jostling for position in an artificial league table, but ensuring that Web teams are willing to share best practice in exploiting the potential of the Social Web.
