Liz Lyon, Director of UKOLN, spoke recently in Arlington, Virginia
at a forum called “Reinventing Science Librarianship: Models for the Future”, co-sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI). Liz” presentation, entitled “Transition or Transform? Repositioning the Library for the Petabyte Era”, addressed the theme “Data Curation:
Issues and Challenges” and is now available.

The Times Higher Education published an article “By the Blog: Academics tread carefully” on 9 October 2008 describing how UK scholars are slowly but surely heading into the blogosphere and confronting many of the issues arising among their US colleagues. A number of UK academics and practitioners were
asked to contribute including Brian Kelly as UK Web Focus.

CILIP Cataloguing and Indexing Group Conference Material Available

Curation and Preservation Architecture for CAD Engineering Models

A paper entitled “Towards a Curation and Preservation Architecture for CAD Engineering Models” co-authored by Alexander Ball and Manjula Patel of UKOLN and Lian Ding, IdMRC, University of Bath was presented by Alex at the Fifth International Conference on Preservation of Digital Objects
(iPRES 2008), a conference which became the subject of a Guardian
editorial “In Praise of…” item of September 30, 2008. Both the paper and
associated slides are available.

Library 2.0 Balancing the Risks and Benefits

Risks and Benefits to Maximise the Dividends” at the Bridging Worlds 2008
Conference which will be held in Singapore over 16-17 October 2008.
